Dear Cealaigh:

We barely know each other, you and I. Both living in the same town for a short while. And yet I feel a little closer to you than to most of the other citizens, for we both have grown up in the same area. Different circumstances, to be sure, but there's that bond of a common homeland and culture.

Heresy said that your youngest horse had to be put down, that she had colic and was killing herself, such pain was she in. I'm certain that you've received a multitude of condolences, including one that I wrote in haste when I heard the sad news. But now, after thinking it over for a week, I feel that my brief message was not enough. And so I write this longer letter.

I know you were proud of her. I can somewhat remember you relating to all of us how she was born, and the months you spent grooming and training her. The plans you had for this particular mare when she got old enough to compete. That's a special bond -- and I think that everyone could tell how you loved her so.

I can't say that I can truly sympathize with you. I've never had a pet that I cared for, nor have I even experienced the loss of a loved one. But it does hurt me to know that a friend is going through such sorrow.

Hopefully the support you have from the whole town will help you get through this difficult time. Know that we grieve with you, and that you are not alone in your sorrow.

Your friend,

Larissa the Bard
