This is why I bought the other two books of the series. David A Powell has designed many of Civil War games by The Gamers/MMP and David A Friedrichs has also contributed though I don’t recall where. Powell has taken his years of studying Chickamauga and put it into this Savas Beatie Military Atlas Series book.
Chickamauga was one of the major battles in the western theater during the American Civil War. It caused the downfall of Union General William S Rosecrans (who was replaced by Ulysses S Grant) and made a name for Union General George Thomas, “The Rock of Chickamauga”.
As usual we start with the maneuvering taking place before the battle, in this case covering June 22 to September 18. September 19 and 20 is the battle itself detailed over a couple hundred pages. Then there is a few pages on the aftermath of the battle. Finally we have a detailed order of battle including casualties and extensive notes and bibliography sections.
Art on the one hand is a lot better than the previous two books but on the other hand not as detailed as to unit movements. Textwise the writing is better for the most part and Powell tends to not monotonously list the regiments in order of deployment when we can see it on the corresponding map. One thing I liked about the maps is that you can see the mountains and valleys and see how troop movements naturally developed.
It’s a very well done book and being not familiar with the battle I found it a very interesting read.
