CA Gubernatorial Debate - May 06 2026

The third debate had seven candidates (Tony Thurmond out but Antonio Villaraigosa stays). Only one hour though so it was sometimes hectic. They did start out fairly well behaved but got pretty bad in the second half.

Point totals

  • Matt Mahan (10)
  • Antonio Villaraigosa (9)
  • Tom Steyer (7)
  • Xavier Becerra (5)
  • Katie Porter (4)
  • Steve Hilton (1)
  • Chad Bianco (-2)

I was impressed with both mayors, Mahan and Villaraigosa. When it came down to solutions they had practical answers. Becerra and Porter maybe a bit too political as sometimes their answers were more generic.

Adding the points for all three debates:

  • Matt Mahan (12 + 6 + 10 = 28)
  • Tom Steyer (11 + 7 + 7 = 25)
  • Xavier Becerra (5 + 4 + 5 = 14)
  • Katie Porter (4 + 6 + 4 = 14)
  • Antonio Villaraigosa (4 + 9 = 13)
  • Steve Hilton (1 + 4 + 1 = 6)
  • Tony Thurmond (3 = 3)
  • Chad Bianco (0 - 1 - 2 = -3)

In general I liked Mahan, Steyer and Villaraigosa the most. I'm a bit ageist so of the three prefer Mahan (age 43) over Steyer (68) and Villaraigosa (73). Seeing both Trump (79) and Biden (83) going senile in office makes me hesitant with a California governor getting there since if they decide to go for President they'll be at danger age.

Seeing as Mahan is still in the race as of today (May 18th) I will vote for him.
