I accompanied my brother and sister as they went shopping at Arden Mall in Sacramento. Like any teenager, my brother is quite fashion conscious. We went to The Gap, Banana Republic, and a couple of other clothing stores that sell "the cool" clothes. My sister also went and bought a few things for herself.

Now I, as someone who has no fashion sense, was totally bored. I'm not someone who likes to spend a couple of hours looking for just the right outfit. Some shirts and pants are all I need. Luckily, my sister buys me a few things for my birthday and Christmas, so I haven't had to buy clothes in quite a while.

I wear the same pair of pants day after day until I wear holes in them. Then I change pants to another pair. For shirts I wear the same small selection of a dozen or so shirts of various types. Nothing I wear is flashy or colorful, mostly browns, blues, and greens.

My appearance is not something I try to keep in good order. I don't try to look like a slob, but I don't try to look particularly sharp either. I only shave every couple of days, and even then it's not an extremely close shave. I don't comb my hair much or try to style it like my parents want me to do.

Take hair cuts. I always hated getting my hair cut. So when I went to college I let my hair grow long. That was a mistake. Still, I don't like hair cuts, so when I do get my hair cut I just have the barber (I go to a real honest to goodness barber shop, not some sissy styling salon) cut my hair short. Then I let it grow until I feel it's getting in my way.

I don't like wearing shirts with logos on them. It's weird for me to wear a shirt advertising some company, product, or concept just because I got the shirt for free at a convention or from a friend. I guess I don't want to advertise for other people. It's also strange to me that people would actually buy a shirt so they have the privilege of advertising something.

Actually, I also don't wear t-shirts with a lot of graphics because the fumes make me sick. It's whatever they use to impress these images onto a shirt, but after a day of wearing them, I'm pretty naseous and light-headed. Washing a shirt a lot helps (once the image starts fading), so maybe it's some applicant to make the image last longer.

It takes more time and effort than I'm willing to devote to look good. Men have it better since the standards are not that high. Women though have to work it to look up to par. It's one of those things that is unfair, but it's nice to see a pretty woman dressed up.

So in closing, I definitely could look better. I suppose I take some amount of pride in not being vain, but it's also an excuse so I don't have to devote the time and energy into it.
