So I was driving to work and listening to the radio (I
keep
forgetting to buy a new CD player). I had it on some Country
station and this song came on. It's a remake of an 80's song, not
too sure on the title but the chorus goes "I ain't missing you at
all".
I'm listening to the song and I realize that I don't
particularly
like this version of the song. One of my indicators that you're
getting old is that remakes sound worse than the original (or
previous versions). I guess that's more of a "if you remember the
older version it has history with you, but it also means you've
been around a while".
During the 80's I liked all the remakes, but then they
were made
for my age group and for my times. It's gotten to the point where
I'm no longer part of the up-and-coming generation, I'm the
current generation. Have to stop being so... juvenile and start
being more responsible. Maybe next week.
My sister is more into 80's music than I am. I like it,
but I
tend to buy more contemporary music. Stephanie though buys a lot
of 80's compilations CDs. Strangely though, she's also into
alt-type music. I never imagined my sister listening to Match Box
20 or some other groups that I can't remember. She even almost
went to Alice's Now and Zen music event last weekend (she was
going to take my brother but he got sick).
One of the artists I like listening to is Chely Wright,
who after
four CDs and five years finally got her first #1 song in the
country music charts a week or two back. Anyway, her first CD is
very traditional country, shockingly so since that was the last
CD I bought of hers. As you go through the CDs it gets more and
more like contemporary country until her last CD is quite
contemporary. I suppose that's typical as artists slowly change
their music over time. But there is a big difference between her
first and second CD.

One thing I miss, now that I listen to country music, is
not
being able to watch any music videos. CMT, which is Country Music
Television, isn't shown on my cable network. And in fact, the
only country-type channel is TNN. It's a shame since music videos
are one way to see the artists that you like.
I used to watch MTV when I was a sophomore in college,
about 92-
93. We had an illegal cable tap that the last tenants had put in
so we just used it until the cable company finally shut it off
after a few months. But during that time I watched this music
channel I had heard about.
MTV played a lot more music then than they do now. They
were
doing some 80's revival and brought back some of the original VJs
to host for while. I remember seeing Kari Wuhrer who was hosting
the late night alt-music show. I don't remember the other VJs too
well, but they only had 5-6 so you saw them all the time
(assuming you watched MTV all the time like I did).
VH1 was for old music. Another sign that I was getting
older was
when they moved all the music I liked to VH1 and started the
cutting edge crap on MTV. So I moved to VH1 2-3 years ago. That
didn't last long as VH1 has gotten into too many shows, not as
much music, and the music is really old or too new. Or maybe I'm
just a bitter person. So now I don't watch music videos.
