The next match pits the Lyran Tiger (Heavy Cruiser)
"S.M.S. Prowess" against
the Romulan War Eagle Cruiser "I.R.V. Eagle". The Lyrans are a feline
race,
much like the Kzinti. In fact, they border the Kzinti and are mortal
enemies
of that same race . The Lyrans are on the Western edge of the known
galaxy,
bordering the Kzinti, Klingon, and Hydran nations. Allied to the
Klingons,
the Lyrans have twin hulled (and some triple hulled) ships sporting
standard
phasers and disruptors. Lyran phaser arrangement is low on offensive
phaser-1s,
relying on having more phaser-3s to be used as anti-drone and
anti-fighter
defense.
The Lyran racial weapon is the Expanding Sphere Generator (ESG), which
creates
a force field around the ship, damaging any physical object that it
rams. The
ESG is used defensively, to destroy drones and shuttles which stray too
near,
or offensively, to ram other ships. Of particular importance is the
fact that
ESG fields are unaffected by the cloaking device, making cloaked ships
rather
vulnerable against Lyran ships. The Lyran Tiger has two ESGs. It should
be
noted that ESGs are rather power hungry, which can make the Tiger run a
bit
slow.
Halfway across the known galaxy, past the Klingons and Federation, lies
the
Romulan Star Empire. Much maligned in Star Fleet Battles, the Romulan
navy
has historically, up until the General War, been composed of outdated
designs
that were no match against their Federation and Gorn opponents. Matters
were
slightly improved when the Klingons started supplying outdated Klingon
ships
to the Romulans, who converted the ships with plasma torpedos and
claking
devices. Romulan ships are characterized by their plasma torpedos, a
weapon
that the Gorns and ISC also use, and the cloaking device, which no one,
except
the odd Orion pirate, has.

The War Eagle is an old ship, dating back to the old War
Birds that had no
warp power and only one plasma R torpedo for a weapon. The War Eagle
adds 20
points of warp power and four forward firing phaser-1s to add to the
War Birds
25 point shields all-around. Deficiencies are many: only a 25 point
front
shield, few internals, almost as few as the Orion Raider, lack of rear
firing
weapons, half the phaser armament of other ships and 2/3 the power,
maximum
speed of 21. In the War Eagle's favor are its excellent rear and flank
shields,
five points of armor which will absorb the first five hits that get
past the
shields, cheap cloaking cost (although against the Lyran and its ESGs,
it's not
an advantage), and the general elan and dedication of its officer
corps.
In this battle the Romulan has to depend on its plasma R torpedo, a
massive
weapon that can inflict 50 points of damage at close range. You only
get one
shot, so run up and make sure the plasma torpedo will hit before you
fire it.
Then use your phaser-1s to keep doing damage and hope you have the time
to
recharge the plasma torpedo. A rather weak strategy, but the only one
that I
can think of.
The Lyran tactic is much easier. You have the bigger ship and can do
more
damage if both ESGs hit. Charge up the ESGs and ram the Romulan, you
can do
50 points of damage rather easily with just the ESGs. Be careful that
the
Romulan doesn't use his shuttles to blunt the ESG. Save your phasers
for anti-
shuttle and anti-plasma torpedo work, you should be able to blunt the
plasma
R by 20 points if you can fire all the phasers at it. The disruptors
will be
useful for finishing off the Romulan, but they're probably a waste of
power
early on in the fight, although the Romulan doesn't have the speed to
run away
so maybe you'll have power for the disruptors.
