Douglas Adams died last Sunday. Although somewhat of a great loss to some, I don't really feel anything. He wrote some good Dr Who episodes and the first couple of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy books were also good. And he loved Macs and was a rather enlightened person. But people die, we move on. I was more saddened when Isaac Asimov died, and Gene Roddenberry only a few months earlier...

You ever seen those bumper stickers that say "Think About World Peace" or something like that, like it's some sort of ideal to strive for? Heck, don't just think about it, *do* something...

So I get this message of fan of Ms Leick's. He posted a message on one of the official X-Files boards suggesting (in an almost incoherent and spasmic way) that Ms Leick should play a starring role in X-Files, playing a character to replace Mulder with the same kind of wild dedication to uncovering the unknown.

Ok, even not being an X-File viewer I can see that this isn't going to work. Gillian Anderson is signed on for another season and Scully is too popular to replace. Replacing Robert Patrick and having two women lead the show also doesn't look like a winner to me and adding another agent also seems useless.

Naturally I check out the board to make sure the guy is not a raving lunatic and what do you know, he is. Some people disagree with him, he disagrees back. Some people ridicule the idea, he flames them. He has over half of the posts on the thread and it's not getting anywhere, after less than 24 hours.

It's just weird what kids think up. They don't think their ideas through, start to implement and run into a wall that they could have easily avoided or ameliorated by planning ahead. And coming up with an idea like "print out web pictures on your color printer and mail them to Chris Carter at ..." is not the sign of a carefully thought out plan...

There's a guy here that has one of those motor scooters. I've seen him drive by a couple of times, probably going home from work. Very loud machine, as are a lot of motorcycles. At least a motorcycle I can understand since it has a good range. But a motorscooter is not that much better a range than a normal bicycle. Seems rather lazy to me...

Spring cleaning continues as I slowly throw away things, trying to simplify my life again. In my living room is a pile of bags with old magazines and clothes that don't fit me and that I haven't worn in years in any case. I carry down a bag or two when I go down to the car for work, so it gives a rate of stuff I need to find to throw away. I also have a bunch of boxes for things that I no longer have and games I'm never going to play (though those I should try to give away).

Especially for the shirts that don't fit me. As I'm carrying this bundle of clothes out I'm thinking "man, that's a lot of money spent on clothes that I only wore once, if even that much." That's the way it is sometimes. If I ever lose weight I still won't regret throwing these clothes away. I'm hoping I end up with like a couple of dozen short and long-sleeved shirts at the end of this. That's good enough for me...

So Dave was saying how he installed XFree86 and that I should do it too so I can run MacGIMP. No, it's a little too complicated for me. Lots of binaries to download, patches to apply, and then you have to install it. It's like three different products to get everything running. Still going to wait until there's an easier install.

Sierra Maps does have GIMP 1.2.1 on a CD for Mac OS X, including an installer. It installs everything you need and it's $25. One option for people like me who really want the program but are intimidated by the installation. I'll think about it, though I have other things I need to buy first...
