Heading into season 3 of fantasy football, I can't
imagine improving on the
11-6 records I've had the past two seasons. Unfortunately, Sandbox now
has
some sort of global naming scheme because the Sacramento Stallions were
already taken (or maybe you can't reuse old names). So this year we're
the
Sacramento Torgians (named after a breed of horse in the Witch World
novels).
Oh, let me warn you if you sign up for Sandbox: they're really into
spamming
you and turning it off is tricky (their unsubscribe page is full of
double
negatives). I'm still not sure if I made it so I don't get spam from
them.
This year you could actually specify the numbers of players to draft
from
each conference for the skill positions, that way you don't have to
draft
three people just to get a good AFC player. I went with my resolution
of
last year to draft four quarterbacks, which means that I only have four
defencemen. The two extra QB picks didn't help much, as they're both
backups.
Otherwise it was a standard draft for me, with 4 running backs, 4 wide
receivers, 2 tight ends, and 2 kickers.
Since I don't adjust my draft list it's sort of luck of the draw, and
somehow I got an Oakland heavy team. Rich Gannon at QB, both Charlie
Garner
and Tyrone Wheatley at RBs, and Sebastian Janikowski as the kicker. All
four
will be regular starters, which means that week 5 will be rough, when
Oakland
has a bye week. Oakland had one of the best offenses last year, let's
hope
they can continue that. Having both Garner and Wheatley is probably not
as
good as having two regular backs, since they'll eat into each other's
playing
time. But it's still nice to have both.
Strangely, both tight ends are my only returning players. Frank Wycheck
is
starting and I had him last season, while Marcus Pollard was my starter
in
the first season. Unless I missed someone, everyone else is new. The
ongoing
problem at the beginning will be the thinness at defense. I'll most
likely
get rid of the two extra quarterbacks and get a couple of defensive
linemen,
which I don't have any of. It's hard to stop a running team without
DLs.
Anyways, that's the team for 2001. On paper at least, probably the best
draft team I've had yet (that's easy to say since I actually have a
good
quarterback this year). In general, I think that everybody should be
able
to win at least eight games just by playing the best player available
for
a given week. I don't know how well I'll do, but I'm hoping for another
eleven win season, or better.
