I think I finally feel well again. After gaming Saturday
I was feeling quite
awful. A long, though not great, night's sleep and when I woke up
Sunday I
had a bit of a headache and some aches, but I felt a lot better. For
some
reason I decided to move some things around in my apartment and by that
night
I was feeling not too good again. Then I started coughing. That hacking
cough that makes every cough feel like your lungs are on fire.
But Monday morning at least it felt better. I was still
coughing but at
least
it didn't hurt as much. I called in sick since I didn't want to push my
luck
again, then I remodeled some more. New Year's eve was uneventful. I
stayed at
home not feeling great and watched the ball drop on Times Square (tape
delayed of course) on MTV. I got a lot of reading done and went to
sleep at
02:00. Now it's Tuesday night and I feel 90% Still a little achy but
not more
than usual I think.
I think what's helped is the remodeling I did. It's
amazing how nice a
home
looks when you've cleaned up and moved things around to make it less
cluttery. Now I have all my Star Trek stuff in one area, all the
wargames and
military books in another area, BattleTech has its own bookcase, and
all my
to-read novels are ordered on a shelf. I put away the card table, moved
the
Sweet VCR off the floor, moved my dresser to the side of the room. Not
much
more empty space, but it looks much nicer. You know, I need another
bookcase
that can hold big books, not just paperbacks.
Boy, my place gets quite dusty. Sure, I don't dust at
all, so I guess
having
spots with layers of dust is not unusual. But even where I do dust it
gets
dusty again before you know it. Obviously, I just don't have enough
experience dusting otherwise I would know that dust collects quickly,
hence
why maids dust every week on television.

As I was rearranging stuff around, I was thinking "I
sure have a lot of
Dave and Julie's things here". VCR, Thales, a rope ladder, Dragonstrike
game,
Fortress America game, plus the fondue and rotisserie sets which
although
mine are gifts they gave me so I blame them for those too. I also have
a lot
of empty boxes taking up space, which I suppose I could move to my
storage
closet next to my car. But I don't really think of the storage closet
as mine
since it's not in my apartment.
My web server was crashing constantly a month ago. After
some
diagnostics,
it seems that the Pictorious Internet Server is freezing the whole
machine.
Sigh, too much to expect out of a very old program. So I'm not running
it
which means that I'm not serving up any video files, the only thing I
was
using it for.
This has changed my plan. When I get the iMac back from
Michael, I will
install Mac OS X and turn it into my next server. Apache is much more
stable
and the iMac is a relatively fast machine, though not extremely loaded
with
memory. But since I'm just running background server tasks, memory
should
not be that much of a problem.
Ok, so the plan now is to give my mom the old PowerBook.
It has a
serial port
so she can use the printer with it. The built in LCD is not really
larger
than a 13" monitor and it has a higher DPI so maybe it might strain her
eyes.
I can turn the resolution down to 800x600 but then the picture is a bit
fuzzy. We'll see.
I can then take the Performa and use that as an
emergency server and
scanning
station. And I still throw away my ancient PowerMac. That'll leave me
with
three 13" monitors, so I should toss at least one of them. I'll still
have
Dave's USB serial port adapter so that he can use it for connecting to
Thales
in console mode.
