I was trying
to watch "House on Haunted Hill" but my DVD player couldn't read the
second layer. Actually two DVD players couldn't read the second layer.
DVDs, although a great format for video, are much more finicky than
CDs. Scratches and dirt just stop the DVD player, though players on a
computer are less tolerant than consumer DVD players. I do tend to have
minor problems with most DVDs I get from Netflix -- usually cleaning
them up a bit helps a lot.
I've been playing "Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption" for the Mac.
Probably bought it six months ago and it's been out for a year. Hmm,
maybe longer since it's a Mac OS Classic game. It's a cool game with a
3rd person camera view that swings around and is surprisingly easy to
maneuver. I've completed half the game in 13 hours (game time, a good
25% more since I had to redo certain parts to get it right). Very
linear story line and perhaps a bit too easy, but it is interesting.

Safari 1.0 was
released this week. As far as I can tell it's the same as Public Beta
2. Https still doesn't work through my company firewall. It still
renders some of my work sites badly. But when it does work it's fast
and smooth and I do like it better than Mozilla. I took a look at
Camino (nee Chimera), the Cocoa browser based on the Gecko engine. Not
bad but it doesn't look quite as elegant as Safari.
Katherine Hepburn died today. She only made some 50 movies and I've
only seen her in a few. I guess my impressions of her are as an older
actress in The African Queen, The Lion in Winter, and Rooster Cogburn.
Rowe of course mentions roles when she was younger and much more
striking. But even after seeing her in those roles, when I think of
Katherine Hepburn I do picture her as when she was in her later 40's.
