I got two
renew notices from TV Guide. One was to renew Julie's subsription at
$0.91 per issue which comes out to almost $48. The other one was to
subscribe at a 2-for-1 rate (me and a gift subscription) for $56. I
don't want TV Guide, so although the 2-for-1 offer is cost effective,
it's not worth it to me. The first offer seemed more reasonable, until
I visited the TV Guide site and saw that a new gift subscription is
less thant $40!
That's the problem with renewal notices. The magazines send you various
different offers at different values which is confusing. Reader's
Digest made me subscribe myself just so I could renew Julie's
subscription. MacWorld is already sending me renewal notices and my
subscription is good until October 2005, almost two years away! It gets
insane after a while and it's pretty annoying.

I broke down
and ordered Mac OS X 10.3 and it just arrived. Installing is a bit of
work since I do a clean install. First transfer everything to my
PowerBook G3, which temporarily becomes my everyday machine. Then wipe
out the PowerBook G4 and install a clean system. Then slowly install
programs and move files as needed from the PowerBook G3 to the
PowerBook G4. Mostly it's setting up everything, including server
functions, so I can clone the system to my server and the backup
PowerBook.
I also want to upgrade the RAM to 1 GB, because 512 MB is not quite
enough. Dave may have a point that those slowdowns I'm occasionally
experiencing are because I'm running out of memory. I'm definitely
running a lot of things and especially if I buy Virtual PC I'll need
the RAM. I'm also thinking of upgrading the internal hard drive to 80
GB but that's less of a need since 40 GB seems good.
