Ms Leick talked about Xena: Warrior Princess and the
other actors, about some
of her beliefs (she's really into Hinduism and some other eastern
philosophies
and raves about yoga), about fans and her personal philosophies. I can
contrast
the experience with yesterday. Fans treated Grace Lee Whitney with a
quiet
respect and she told personal stories in a comradely manner. Tim Russ
was more
proactive, trying to put on a show. The fans reacted accordingly by
being louder
and more boisterous. Ms Leick plays a role, and she admitted that
onstage at a
convention she is playing a role for the fans. And the fans respond by
being
thunderously enthusiastic and irreverant.
I was quite impressed with Ms Leick's performance.
Unfortunately, there
is a
part of me that refuses to become deeply emotionally attached to
anything. Hence
why I have so many internal rules. But Ms Leick is a natural at getting
and
keeping people's attention and seeing her is quite an experience.
Pictures: Day 1
The Creation Star Trek/Xena Convention at Memphis ran
two days, July 8 and 9.
I came to see Hudson Leick, who appeared on the 9th. But as long as I
was here
I thought I'd spend a few days and see Memphis. My brother Chris came
with me
and on the 7th we went to see Graceland (whose photos are on another
page).
The first day of the convention had Star Trek material.
The pictures
didn't
come out that great. I took almost 150 pictures, of which almost 70
made the
initial cut, wherein I toss anything blurry. Indoor pictures with
moving subjects
are not what the CoolPix can take reliably. Especially zoomed in. I
just kept
fiddling around with the settings, taking a few pictures, then fiddling
again
in the hope of getting a few good pictures. So here are the 12 pictures
I picked
to represent the first day of the convention.

Grace Lee
Whitney was a late addition to the convention. She actually wasn't
compensated by Creation and had to get herself to the convention (her
son is an airline pilot, so she gets to travel a lot -- or I remembered
this tidbit wrong). Anyway, she did get to speak and she talked about
Star Trek, the people and little anecdotes. She's a good speaker and
answered the random questions with aplomb. [Full] |

Grace moved around
the stage a lot and likes to gesticulate. It's quite
hard to get clear pictures of her. Without flash and zoomed in the
shutter speed needs to be quick. I had it down to 1/30s but those
pictures were really dark. I think the 1/8s pictures came out ok --
good compromise between light and speed. [Full] |

My third picture of
Grace. Since the guests are the big attractions in a con
I wanted more than just a couple of pictures of Grace and Tim. I'm
still getting
used to the camera so there weren't that many good pictures to choose
from. By
the time Tim came up on stage I was starting to get better. And of
course the
important for me was to get good shots of Ms Leick so today was all
practice. [Full]
