Apologies to Robert for not getting the second part of
his interview
submitted for the June 2000 Newsletter. I totally dropped the ball on
that one. Since this interview was last updated a year ago (with the
original interview conducted over two years ago), I want to note that
Robert has completed his first "rewrite" of the television history and
is working on the next one. You can read his stories on his site at
or from the Callisto's Tales Fan Fiction
site at .
This is the last time that I'll get to remind you
readers to write the
authors and tell them how much you liked or didn't like their stories.
Even just a little note will make their day. And for those aspiring
writers out there, I urge you to keep writing. Literature is one of the
great achievements of humanity. Contribute to it and know that your
words
will live forever.
-- Kevin (Finally done after over two years! Frak, what
do I do next?)
[Kevin] Which is your personal favorite Callisto
story that you have written? What
makes it your favorite story?
[Robert] The one I'm writing right now. But of
the ones I've written so far, "The
Making of a Modern Goddess" is tops. I liked it most because it
completed
the mini-arc I'd started in "More Sinned..." - everything in those
stories
essentially leads up to and explains "Yes, Virginia, there is a
Hercules". I
had to do a lot to get there and seeing it all pay off was worthwhile.
I
also felt it was reasonably innovative as fan fic goes and made
Callisto
less two-dimensional: she has more depth and more background as a
result of
the story.

[Kevin] If you had to do it all over again, are
there any stories that you would
change substantially? What would you change?
[Robert] More Sinned Against...: the entire
second half is rubbish. The fight scenes
need far more description. The plot exposition scene is way too hurried
(even I can't follow it and I wrote it!). Basically, it needs about
another
five or ten more pages to let it develop properly.
Callisto Explains It All: I'd find a way to show how
Callisto's plot
against
Ares develops his paranoia. Right now the story's about half the length
it
should be because that plot is all condensed into about a page or two.
The Making of a Modern Goddess: Not a lot actually. I'd
tried to get
some
different pictures and maybe make Hercules a stronger character, but
otherwise it turned out quite well. Maybe a few more jokes.
Otherwise, bar the occasional piece of ropey dialogue,
I'd leave them
more
or less as is.
[Kevin] Who do you write for? Who is the
intended audience for your Callisto
stories?
[Robert] Mainly myself but I'd like everyone to
read them! Generally they're intended
for the adult members of Callisto fandom (I don't mean that in a
patronising
way: I genuinely mean the adult members) rather than people who just
want to
read a big fight scene or whatever. But I have those as well.
