1st Altairan Guards: The Blowfish

The original Blowfish were formed on January 3020 and consisted of a Mech lance and a Leopard-class Dropship ("The Flounder"). Back then it was just Clyde Brown, Izzy Finch, Roy Fowlker and Sir Wrigley. Selena Kyle joined in March of that first year. Through ten years of combat and adventure the unit was built up to two battalions of Mech with infantry, armor, and aerospace support.

The Blowfish saw action on Verthandi against the nascent Gray Death Legion, spent two years on Solaris playing in the Mech games (with Selena Kyle becoming Solaris champion), visited Terra for the Davion-Steiner wedding, and fought in the 4th Succession War for the Draconis Combine, eventually even fighting off a rogue Comstar assault on Altair.

Early on the Blowfish incorporated and sold stock in the company. Although this made the principal officers instantly rich, it also turned out to be the key to the Blowfish's downfall. Not from without but from within. Selena Kyle, Duchess of Altair, bought out the Blowfish at the end of the 4th Succession War in order to quickly rebuild the Altair military. Though Clyde Brown and his supporters tried to prevent this, in the end Kyle had too much money and influence among the members of the Blowfish.

The Blowfish's two battalions were split up and form the core of the first two Altairan Guard regiments. The 1st Altairan Guard is comprised of the veteran Mechwarriors and heavier machines. It is well supported and has it's own Invader-class Jumpship ("Fugu") and an Overlord-class Dropship ("The Flounder II") for transportation. The unit insignia is an orange and white drawing of a blowfish all puffed up.

2nd Altairan Guard: Blowfish Deux

The 2nd Altairan Guard was formed in mid-3030 out of the Blowfish 2nd Battalion. Originally the Blowfish training battalion, Roger Isa has worked hard to turn the 2nd into a worthy companion to the 1st Altairan Guard. The 2nd Aerospace is composed of brand new hires, hence their Questionable rating. As is usual for Altairan forces, the 2nd Cavalry is composed almost entirely of heavy hover tanks. For transporation the 2nd has a Union-class Dropship ("Swordfish") and a Buccaneer-class Dropship. The unit insignia is a green and white drawing of a blowfish all puffed up.

3rd Altairan Cavalry: Heck’s Angels

Originally the Altairan 1st Armored Cavalry Regiment, Duchess Selena Kyle rechristened the unit as the 3rd Altairan Cavalry when the Blowfish were incorporated into the Altairan military. The 3rd Cavalry's mission is the same as has been traditional since the days when cavalry rode horses: find the enemy, screen the enemy from the main force, provide military intelligence to the main force. The 3rd is designed to be mobile, with each cavalry squadron having enough hover transports to carry an infantry company. The 3rd has no aerospace assets as it is intended to be a home unit. The unit insignia is a stylized red and black Angelfish tank commander riding his hover tank.

4th Altairan Scouts: All Alone in the Night

The 4th Altairan Scouts were formed from the nucleus of the failed 4th Altairan Lancers. The original Lancer experiment was a regiment of mercenaries who would be employed as a source of revenue for Altair. Filled by the first graduating class of the Altairan Royal Military Academy, the experiment proved to be a failure as internal dissension tore the unit apart and almost caused them to lose their first campaign.

Still, from the ashes of failure a new concept was formed. The lesson learned from the Lancers was that small demi-companies composed of the best and most headstrong warriors could accomplish almost any suicidal mission. Newly promoted Tai-i Johan Gustaffessen championed his pet theory and has been put in charge of the reformed unit.

The Altairan Scouts are composed of small independent teams of one to two lances in size. All positions are filled by elite warriors. Each team is contracted independently and will almost certainly operate by itself. With almost no support the teams are ideally suited for objective raids and deep reconaissance missions.

Colors

Unit mechs and vehicles are crimson with gold highlights. Uniforms are black and crimson with gold edgings.

Officers

Tai-i Gustaffessen is a bold warrior with a gruff and caustic personality. He commands with an iron fist and demands nothing but 110% effort from everyone, most of all himself.

Tactics

Given the personalities of each team the tactics are nothing if not varied. Even in a given team the warriors will most likely fight singly or in pairs. What they lack in coordination they have to make up with superb skills and uncommon luck.

Support

Each team is expected to operate without a support group. Therefore each team member is expected to be a skilled technician though it is better if the team takes minimal damage in the first place. The Scouts have a centralized support group for inter-mission repairs and modifications.
