Book Review: Enterprise: Surak’s Soul (2003) [**]
Publisher: Pocket Books
Author: JM Dillard
Format: 4”x7” Paperback Book, 218 pages.
Rating: 2/5
This was a disappointing book. It tries to give all the major characters equal screen time so there is very little characterization. The book’s title reflects T’Pol’s decision early on in the story to go back to Surak’s Philosophies of non-violence. By the end she reconciles the extreme pacifism of Surak with the realities of space exploration. But given her limited screen time it seemed to me like it was glossed over and unsatisfactory.
By the end of chapter three, almost a third of the way through the book, you can pretty much predict what’s going to happen storywise. It was just very predictable and there were no surprises. No real sense of danger, no real sense of conflict (internal or external), everything is being phoned in.
Other than the nice headshot of Jolene Blalock on the cover there is not much reason to recommend the book.
