iTunes | Elektra (2005) [***]
20th Century Fox, Regency Enterprises, Marvel Entertainment
Elektra (Jennifer Garner) is a martial arts assassin for hire whose mother was murdered when she was a kid. In her latest job she has to stew for two days before she’s given her target. She befriends Mark Miller (Goran Visnjic) and his teenaged daughter Abby (Kirsten Prout).
When her targets turn out to be father and daughter Elektra can’t bring herself to do it. She then saves them from demon assassins. It’s The Hand, her arch-nemesis, an organization of ninja warriors with demonic ties.
Chase chase chase until they find haven with Elektra’s old master, Stick (Terence Stamp). Abby is revealed to be The Treasure, one of the once in a lifetime martial arts prodigies who will become a great warrior. And The Hand wants Abby for her power.
Elektra gambles it all and challenges Hand leader Kirigi (Will Yun Lee) to a one on one duel. Of course he cheats and brings in his henchmen. Meanwhile Elektra is timely saved by Abby, which puts Abby in great danger. Can Elektra and Abby defeat Kirigi and his minions?
Even Jennifer Garner can’t make this into more than a mediocre film. It feels incomplete, like another 10 or 15 minutes of story and character development would have helped. I think too many things are mentioned and not explained which, since I’m not an Elektra fan, makes it a bit confusing.
Still, when Garner finally appears in the red suit for the big fight it’s pretty sweet.
