This four-issue series is a prequel to the 2009 Star Trek movie. It tells the story of how Nero and his ship became involved, how Romulus was destroyed, how Nero upgraded his ship and how he and Spock ended up going through the black hole.

I’m going to spoil things by writing down some movie question answers.

How could a nova destroy the Universe? This unusual nova gets stronger as it destroys planets and other stars. It wasn’t explained why this was happening.

Why is Nero’s ship, a mining vessel, so heavily armed? After Romulus is destroyed Nero makes it to a secret Romulan research base where his ship is outfitted with experimental Borg-derived armor and weapons.

Does Star Trek rewrite the timeline or spin off a new one? It seems clear at the end that the pre-Star Trek movie timeline remains intact, so the movie is an alternate timeline.

What did Nero do while waiting 20 years for Spock to show up? That’s not answered in this series.

Art and story are fairly good. Data, Jean Luc Picard and Geordi LaForge all make appearances and the story looks to be set at least several years after Star Trek: Nemesis. Overall it’s a nice series.
