I recently re-watched Top Gun, probably the first time in 20 years. It's still an amazing film. Amazing sound track (I have the soundtrack album). Great jet fighter sequences (I believe the US Navy fully cooperated). A good story that, although perhaps old hat by now, was a roller coaster ride then and even now.
Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is a hot-shot F-14 pilot whose father was shot down during the Vietnam War. Along with his Radar Intercept Officer (the F-14 being so complicated it required a second crewman to handle the electronic warfare duties) Nick "Goose" Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards) Pete is assigned to Miramar for the several-week long Fighter Weapons School's Top Gun program where the best Navy pilots go for advanced dogfighting training. (Top Gun was the first such school, established during the Vietnam War because Navy pilots were not doing well dogfighting against MIGs. The US Air Force instituted their own program a couple of years later.)
At Miramar Maverick competes with rival pilot Tom "Iceman" Kazansky (Val Kilmer). Maverick is all emotion and risk-taking while Iceman is cool and by-the-book. Class instructors Mike "Viper" Metcalf (Tom Skerritt) and Rick "Jester" Heatherly (Michael Ironside) see potential in Maverick. Meanwhile Maverick falls for civilian instructor Charlotte "Charlie" Blackwood (Kelly McGillis). (Other future name-level actors: Tim Robbins and Adrian Pasdar as fellow pilots and Meg Ryan as Goose's wife.)
Anyways, eventually Maverick is dealt a severe setback when Goose is killed in an accident. After that he's a shell of his former self and verges on quitting. But after a pep talk from Viper he changes his mind and graduates second in the class behind Iceman. Just in time to participate in the Indian Ocean where tensions are high and the Soviets frisky. There is a climactic dogfight pitting Iceman and Maverick vs six MIGs and then a return home where Maverick meets Charlie again and they ride off into the sunset.
Top Gun was great film then and still a great film now. I watched it streaming on my iPad v4 and it looks great.
