Draft Day (2014)
Draft Day (2014)
Fictional drama centering on the 2014 NFL Draft day. Kevin Costner plays Sonny Weaver, Jr, general manager of the Cleveland Browns who have the number seven pick in the draft. He's a GM under fire from the owner and fans and whose biggest move so far is firing his father, who was the long-time coach of the Browns.
Sonny gets a call from the Seattle Seahawks, who have the number one pick. Will he trade for the number one and get the hot prospect, guaranteed franchise quarterback and future hall of famer? All for the cost of mortgaging the Browns future by giving up their next three number one picks.
The scramble is on as Sonny and his team have to decide whether or not the quarterback is really worth a number one. But they do make the trade. Then Sonny finally settles some internal issues with his girlfriend, Browns cap-ologist Ali Parker (Jennifer Garner), and mom (Ellen Burstyn).
And finally Sonny realizes he made a bad trade and the last part of the film is how he scrambles to recover the Browns future...
It's a great film. Good drama with people and relationships. Neat look at trade negotiations and the backroom dealings (how true is it? who knows.). Some really pretty shots of various NFL stadiums. And a feel good ending to cap the film.
I'm someone who loves NFL football but has never watched the NFL draft nor really paid attention to it. The film made it look exciting and maybe I'll pay attention this year.
