VLC media player v3.0.1 (2018)

macOS App - VLC media player v3.0.1 (2018) [+]

VLC is a free (donation-ware) media player that's been around since 2001. It used to be on the macOS App Store but not currently, though it is on the iOS App Store. But I mostly use the desktop version which you can download from their site and it auto updates.

It supports a lot of video formats. Besides WMV, MP4 and QuickTime it also plays Flash (FLV), MKV and DVDs (either physical DVDs or ripped DVDs). It does not play protected media, so not iTunes videos and I don't think BluRay either though I've never tested that.

Playback is smooth. You can use left and right arrows to skip 10 seconds. You can drag a multi-part video and it'll play them seamlessly like one video. You can resize videos to various aspect ratios for videos that don't have that info encoded correctly.

I don't know if VLC is the most popular computer desktop video player but it's gotta be close. Since the code is open source I'm fairly sure most other video players that I tried from the macOS App Store use VLC engine and not as well as VLC itself.

One thing it lacks is media management and here iTunes is actually quite good even if iTunes video player is very basic.

Apparently you can play Internet radio and podcasts and stream from LAN-shared servers though I've never tried either.

But for video playback VLC is the best. I've tried to replace it but have not found anything as good.
