Apogee MiC 96k (2013)

Apogee MiC 96k (2013) [+]

I've been using an Apogee MiC I'm guessing for five years. This is the second version of MiC (MiC, MiC 96k, and currently MiC Plus). It's a small but heavy because the main body is all metal. It comes with a small stand and three cables (some sort of small USB to 30-pin dock for old iPhones, lightning cable, and USB-A). On the MiC itself there is a Gain wheel control.

That's pretty much all there is. Hook it up to your iOS or Mac and it's an additional audio source. I use it to record our gaming sessions and voice quality is great. It records at 24 bits and 96kHz. Picks up very soft sounds. I use Levelator to even out the sounds and there's like no hiss in the recording, which I used to get when recording with my iPhone internal mic.

Minor complaints. I've heard it doesn't have a standard socket so you can't hook it up to a professional stand and have to use something that will grip the MiC. Never been a problem for me as I always use the included stand which is quite solid.

Gain control doesn't have any haptic clicks so you're pretty much guessing at the setting. You'd have to double check with a test recording which I guess audio professionals do.

I believe the MiC was a couple hundred bucks. I got it as a gift and it's served me well. If mine broke I'd have no hesitation buying the current MiC Plus ($250). Oh, apparently you can still buy refurbished MiC and MiC 96k from Apogee direct.
