Dredd (2012)
In the future the Earth is a wasteland except for Megalopolis-1 (which indicates there are others), a giant city spanning North East America. 800M people where crime is not really even contained but kind of kept in check by the Judges.
Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) has to evaluate rookie Judge Anderson (Olivia Thirlby). Technically did not pass the academy but with exceptional psychic abilities she's given a second chance to impress. Their patrol takes them to Peach Trees, one of the many 200-story tall Megablocks, where a triple murder took place.
As they investigate they tangle with the forces of Ma-Ma (Lena Headey), criminal overlord of Peach Trees. To protect her secrets she closes all exits and has the many gangs in the tower hunt for the two Judges...
I haven't watched this in years but it's still a cool film. Seems closer in tone to the original comics than Stallone's version, which went a bit more comedy than dark comedy. Karl Urban is great and never takes off the helmet. Judge Anderson is one of the better supporting characters and needed foil for Dredd. The action is good.
Overall still a fun, violent action film which cuts away from the gore so it's not crazy gory.
