Here I am, late at night, done writing up the hopefully
final draft
of our architecture document. As I think back, I realize that the
last couple of drafts have been rather half-hearted attempts on my
part. I have procrastinated until virtually the last minute and
spent a couple of hours rewriting when I should have spent twice as
much time to do it properly.
Now I can mull over the question of why I delayed this so long and
I come to one partial conclusion: I still don't like writing public
documents. It takes a lot of effort to write something and try to
do it right. To be clear and concise, comprehensive and exhaustive,
to explain and teach. Certainly, whenever I read my meager efforts,
I tend to think that I'm letting everyone else down with this poor
attempt at technical elucidation.
On another note, Dave Pick wants us to have a group barbeque in the
small grassy area past the parking lot in front of our building.
He wants us to celebrate the fact that our first live implementation
of our product went off with only minor problems. The barbeque was
scheduled for today, but the first good rain of winter hit the Bay
Area yesterday and turned the grassy area into a bit of a bog. So
our barbeque has been postponed until the area dries up.
As for the rain, it was a good one. Nice and hard for a bit, then
letting up. Sometimes stopping and letting the sun partly shine for
a while before starting up again. I do like these kinds of days,
where it's not totally dark from storm clouds but it is raining.
Perhaps contrary to what I wrote a few days ago, this weather feels
good. Must be the rain.

Yesterday I saw The Bone Collector, which is quite a
good movie. A
nice thriller, one with a couple of possible suspects so you're not
entirely sure who did it. It's not a mystery, so you really can't
guess who did it by looking at the provided clues. You can sort of
guess based on who's playing what role. Both Denzel Washington and
Angelina Jolie do good jobs on screen.
I've said that I hate scary movies, but I like thrillers. It's the
element of the supernatural. Thrillers have human antagonists,
perhaps they do some rather amazing feats, but human nevertheless.
An antagonist that can go through walls, appear at will, command
forces beyond normal ken, that scares me. More than that, they can
truly frighten me out of my wits. Thrillers don't quite do that to
me.
I have five movies left to see this year if I'm going to reach my
goal of thirty movies. This is something that I decided on in early
March, when I hadn't seen a movie this year up to that point. It
will be the most theatre experiences since I started keeping track
in 1995. I'll probably see The Messenger, The World is Not Enough,
and then what? Pokemon? American Beauty has been recommended.
So it looks like I'll be going to sleep after 02:00 again. Once
again, I'll probably get woken up by the workers who are doing
something to the use-to-be bushes in front of my apartment complex.
Looks like it'll be at least another week before they're done, and
getting woken up early half of the weekdays is starting to be a
drag. Oh well, endure and persevere.
