6. Reduce weight to 200 lbs. This one is tied to #10
below. Well,
it's the end of the year and I still weigh about 212. I started the
year at 212 and I feel I've gotten fatter, so either that scale I
use is wrong or I've lost more muscle than I care to admit. When I
went to college I weighed 180 and that's about how much I weighed
when I left. My first year in my job I didn't gain much weight, but
I started when I got the car and had to drive to work. Until then
I walked a lot, 40 minutes a day at least. When I left West Coast
I weighed about 205 and was up to 212 after a year at Oracle. So I
still would like to lose some weight, but you have to do that by
building up more muscle, otherwise you're just wasting away. All
in all another failed resolution.
7. Get a physical checkup. Didn't do this one. I guess I haven't
seen a regular doctor (other than when I hurt my foot last month)
since early college, some eight years at least. That can't be good.
There is a huge inertia for me to overcome to look for a doctor
and actually call and schedule an appointment. I don't particularly
want to know everything that's wrong with me, and I know my body
is not anywhere what it was 10 years ago, heck even 5 years ago.
Blood pressure is fine though (again, from when I hurt my foot and
went to the hospital).
8. Get a dental checkup. This one I didn't think I'd get around
to doing either. With some prodding from my sister and Dave, I did
see Dave and Julie's dentist, who's quite nice. My teeth are not
that badly off, gums are a bit bad but have been getting better.
Did have to get a root canal which wasn't as painful as it is on
tv. I'm slowly getting my gums back to ok with this electric tooth-
brush I bought. I'm still not flossing. Perversely, I'll make some
improvement by my next checkup with the toothbrush, then I can
push it a bit further by starting to floss. Otherwise it's just a
big jump and then no improvement. Makes sense to me.

9. Get to work by 11:30 every day. Way way way didn't do
this. I
think I got to work that early maybe two or three times early in
the year. Then I gave up and started coming in at 12:30 then 13:00,
until I slid to sometime about 14:00 a few months ago. I'd stay
until 21:00 or 22:00 so I still got a day's work in, although then
I'd get home really late, have to watch my tapes, and would get to
sleep by 03:00 or 04:00, get up late and start the cycle all over
again. So Pickering eventually says that everyone should really
try to get in by 13:00 at the latest. And I've somehow been able
to keep up with that goal more or less since. Well, four days out
of five.
10. Exercise 20 min 3 times/week. I actually did this for... two or
three weeks. Twenty minutes may not seem like a long time, but it
is. At best I can watch television while exercising. Can't work,
can't surf the Net, can't read a book. It's not very interesting.
And I'm not home that much so I don't want to waste another 20
minutes. Still, this one is a really good idea to do. One that
just requires the discipline to do it regularly. I've obviously
been able to keep up a journal, and brush my teeth every night.
Certainly this is a reachable goal.
So there you have it. Out of ten resolutions, I completed three and
failed seven. Not a very good score I suppose, although was my first
year for resolutions. Let's see what I can come up for next year's
resolutions...
