Now that I've been watching the new television season
for a little over a
week, here are my impressions. First off, I immediately dropped
_Philly_
after watching about half an episode. The premise seemed to be a small
law
firm that defends people. I'm not really into law shows and the
characters
were not ones I wanted to watch. I also saw about two minutes of
_Inside
Schwartz_; heck not even that long. A comedy about a man's life with
sports
interludes just didn't sound interesting.
I've now seen two episodes of _Crossing Jordan_ and I like it. Maybe
it's
like _Quincy ME_ with a better looking medical examiner, but I never
really
watched _Quincy_. It's a murder mystery, well no, that implies a
_Murder She
Wrote_ connotation. More like a cop show dealing with homicide crimes,
except
without the macho cop stuff. Jordan is a bit feisty and impatient with
everyone, which I haven't found annoying yet.
_Frasier_ is a bit long in the tooth nowadays. I liked it when there
was more
focus on his radio program -- you barely ever see Ross any more. Also,
now
that Niles and Daphne are together that thread has also gotten boring.
The
process of falling in love is much more interesting than being in love,
which
is why a lot of movies end with the hero and lady finally together and
that's
it. Admittedly I didn't see much of _Frasier_ last season so some of
the plot
lines were unfamiliar, but this is a sitcom -- I shouldn't have to
depend on
having watched previous episodes.
Much the same for the other comedies of Tuesday, _Three Sisters_,
_Dharma
and Greg_, and _Spin City_ are all kind of boring now. Maybe they're
not as
good or maybe I've just gotten blasŽ about sitcoms, but the latter two
are
steadfast and venerable shows that do very little for me now. And this
year
I'm not watching any of the new sitcoms, though _Undeclared_ and
_Scrubs_
were both highly touted. At least I still find _Friends_ and _Will
&
Grace_ hilarious. _Just Shoot Me_ has also become a bit dull, even with
Wendie Malick in the show. I guess my tastes are changing.
Anyways, _JAG_ is still as good as ever. Looks like Mac won't be
getting
married to Nic Brumby, and they're starting to play up the Mac-Harm
possible
romance thing, which of course I hope they don't do. Sometimes that
sexual
tension between the two leads is inevitable, but this show doesn't need
that.
It's good enough without that element.

_Enterprise_ is really good. Back to the early Star Trek
where the universe
was wilder and more mysterious. Scott Bakula makes a good captain. The
Vulcan
science officer starts out on the more bigoted end of the Vulcan scale
--
definitely not as tolerant of humans as Spock or Tuvok. An engineer who
is
a Southerner and a bit of a human supremacist. Communications
specialist
who's afraid of space travel and the unknown. Helmsman who was born and
bred
in space -- young and perhaps the most experienced spaceman. An alien
doctor
who likes to use organic remedies. It's a fun show.
_ER_ is going through chances again. Sherry Stringfield is back,
Anthony
Edwards and Eriq La Salle may leave at the end of this season, but as
long
as Noah Wyle stays on the show I'll still watch it, because John Carter
is
my favorite character on _ER_. When you look at the IMDB credit for a
show
like _ER_ or _Law & Order_ it's neat to see all these regular cast
members who were on the show for a year or two or for non-contiguous
years.
_Dark Angel_ season 2 is not too bad yet. They infected Max with a
virus
designed to kill Logan if she touches him -- one way to slow down that
romance. Then there are the mutants roaming Seattle, plus the new X-7
kid
killers, and the revelation that Max is "the one" -- none of the three
are
plot elements that I like. I liked the Max versus normal people aspect.
It
made her special. Now it's Max versus a bunch of people just as good as
her.
_Thieves_ was pretty good, even though one reviewer rated it the
lowest. It's
fun and sexy and there may be some chemistry between the two leads.
_Stargate
SG-1_ keeps going along, which is good since it has a good base. It's
not
trying to make things bigger and better or different. _Alias_ was also
quite
good, though a bit melodramatic. The lead character, who thought she
was
working for the CIA, finds out that she's really working for some rogue
intelligence group so she becomes a double agent. Fairly good action
and
Jennifer Garner is yummy.
Lastly, _Band of Brothers_ continues to be dastardly excellent. About
half
way through the mini-series and it is actually better than the book.
Though
of course when you have a dozen hours even television can be as
detailed as
a book. There are still some shows that haven't yet started, which is
good
cause that gives me some ramp up to get used to watching so much
television
again.
