I'm not a fan of vacations, at least the ones where people go places and do things. My idea of vacation is staying at home and doing nothing, or at most catching up on those little things that you've been meaning to do. So I'm not looking forward to tomorrow, when my parents and I drive to Vancouver for the week to go to one of my second-cousin's wedding.

I usually take the an extra day before and after off. A day before to pack and clean up my place a bit and do some errands. It's not fun coming back from vacation to a messy house. I also made sure my VCR is ready to tape my shows (good thing it's summer because one VCR can only record so much -- I do have the EyeTV on my server but that's not perfect). I packaged and mailed Dan's stuff (how many tripods and camera accesory duplicates can a guy need?).
I bought some comic books. Marvel reset Wolverine to #1, so I dropped that title, leaving me with Avengers, New X-Men and Uncanny X-Men. Avengers is interesting, with a government conspiracy, a deadly plague, and the Red Skull. Both X-Men titles are so so. I also picked up Emma Frost #1 -- and I don't know if it's a regular series or a mini-series. Bought it solely on the strength of one scene where she admitted that she had fallen in love with Scott Summers. Up until then she was not a nice character but unrequited love is one of my favorite subjects and that makes her character much more interesting in my book. The series starts with Emma in school when her powers developed -- we'll see how that turns out.

I took the scenic route to my parents, taking Highway 160 which winds its way alongside the Sacramento River. It's hot, the river is peaceful except for the occasional boater, and a few cars to keep me company. As I drive through little towns like Isleton and Walnut Grove, I just think that this is another world. It's more like the start of the 20th Century than the start of the 21st here. It's so...quiet and slow. And empty. That's not the life for me.
