I set up the
ICSM server on my PowerBook. This is our group's Java server
environment. And hey, it actually works without my having to hack the
code to make it work like I did with Mac OS 9. Ok, then I set up the
test client but it only launches the main window and not the softphone
windows. I guess I'll have to work on it next week.
This all comes about because of the recent Windows worms. The worms got
into our network and played havoc -- though nowhere near as bad as the
SQL Slammer worm of a few months ago. Anyway, Global IT went nuts and
started shutting down any Windows NT machine. They had a program that
scanned for NT machines and blocked those Ethernet ports. Which means
that the machines I use for testing either got shut down or, in the
case of my personal machine, I turned it off to hide from the scanner.

Of course,
it's not Global IT's fault. It's all the users who, after multiple
emails, still didn't patch their environments. I kept my computer
patched up and up to date, wasn't dumb enough to open attachments, and
yet I'm punished along with everyone else. I'm not sure if I can
install Windows 2000 or XP on my old computer. Oh well, we're supposed
to get all our computers upgraded to Linux, I guess next year.
The Linux conversion is a surprise. It was mentioned in an article I
read a few weeks ago and it had been the first time I'd heard of it.
Then last week we finally got an official email from some group looking
for advanced users to test the Linux workstations. Eh, to me it's just
another computer I'll barely use if I can help it. Mac OS all the way,
baby!
