I spent today
telecommuting and working from home. Now normally whenever I try this I
end up goofing off and doing other things and not getting anything done
(not that I get that much done in the first place). But today I did get
a couple of things done and spent a few hours working.
So we have a VPN (Virtual Private Network) with some Cisco
hardware/software. 168-bit encryption, which in and of itself doesn't
really make the communications any worse. But encrypting and decrypting
every packet takes up a good amount of processor power and that slows
it down a bit. Also, when my DSL connection slowed down to modem speeds
(which it does occasionally), the VPN connection kept dropping, which
is frustrating.

I only did
this because I went to work and realized that I had forgotten my power
adapter. Normally I'd just do light computing that day and read a lot.
But this time I needed to do heavy computing and I wasn't in the mood
to drive back home and then back to work -- I should get another power
adapter. So I went home and telecommuted and it worked out ok.
Exciting football game today. Indianapolis Colts at the Tampa Bay
Buccaneers. The Colts looked awful in the first half, getting behind
21-0. Going into the fourth quarter it was like 28-7. Four minutes left
and they were behind 35-14. And then they scored three touchdowns in
the final four minutes (with the help of an onside kick and good clock
management) to tie the game. And then the Colts hit a field goal in
overtime to win it. Incredible game.
