So Dave came
this morning and he set up Thales temporarily until they buy a new
house. We gave Thales my other IP address, the one I usually use with
Angela. Updated the name servers with Network Solutions. Made sure the
our DNS records were updated. There were some problems with
connectivity but Dave finally figured out that he had forgotten to add
the gateway address.
It was 20 minutes until 15:00 and Dave suddenly remembered he had to
get to the post office to pick up his mail. Now, we had already figured
out that we'd take his car and drop off stuff at the boat. Then he
could catch a couple hours of sleep while I drove his car to gaming and
then come back to pick him up. So we hopped into his mini-SUV and drove
like crazy to the Oakland post office. We arrived right at 15:00, 20
nerve-racking minutes later, and the door was already closed. Luckily a
postal worker was leaving so Dave was able to get in and pick up his
mail.
I arrived at gaming at about 16:30 or so. Good enough to listen to a an
hour and a half of gaming. It was actually much better for me. I got a
little reading done, hung out with the boys, didn't have to be there
for hours and hours. Eric had to call the game early because he had a
halloween party to attend. I sent Fulton and Woo to get food from KFC
and I went to pick up Dave.
In BattleTech we finally finished the first real Mech combat after 10
hours and the better part of 4 sessions. The thing is I tend to get
demoralized easily. But if I have a week to think it over then I
usually get my morale back and the bad guys keep fighting. So breaking
up the combat over multiple weeks means a longer combat.

Usually Mech
combat turns on lucky hits. Especially with small light mechs because
everybody is moving a lot to avoid getting shot up. And if the battle
is decided by luck then the PCs should win since they have Edge. So
Donald takes down the leader mech with a lucky critical hit (rolling a
three) and blowing up an ammo location. The last two enemy mechs then
had to retreat. The PCs had a good chance at one of the retreating
mechs but Eric skidded on pavement and crashed into a building, leaving
a hole open for the mech to run through.
The fight ended just as Dave had to leave for work. So there was
actually quite a bit of fighting left to do this week. I had half an
adventure prepared, which I'll try to flesh out some more and start
next week. It's a short bit designed to introduce the GURPS 4E combat
system in a violent yet safe manner. We'll see if it works.
After BattleTech we worked on our D&D characters for Eric's
campaign. It is a Middle Earth campaign set in the 1st Age using the
D&D 3.5E rules. I have a wood elf rogue who will be styled as a
gambler and ladies man. Sort of like Maverick in the movie. Donald has
an elven paladin and Woo has an elven sorcerer. Dave is the odd-man out
playing a human fighter.
We have all have various reasons for wanting to kill Morgoth or one of
his minions. It seems kind of suicidal, but that's because I'm looking
at it through a level perspective. I'm sure our characters think it's
possible, though probably extremely hard. For my character, Sauron
cursed my sister so she doesn't have any long term memory. Actually she
can't remember anything more than 15 minutes ago, which I thought was
very harsh.
