Since my brother and I were in Memphis for the Trek/Xena
Convention, I decided
that we should go to Graceland and see Elvis Presley's home. It was a
hot and
muggy day and when we got there (it was Friday) the place was full of
tourists.
The line for the mansion tour (the main attraction) was about a 30
minute wait.
The mansion is separated from the other museums, restaurants, and gift
shops
by Elvis Presley Boulevard, so you have to wait for a bus for the
mansion tour.
But eventually we were able to do all four tours. The mansion tour is
the longest
by far and it only took us about 2-1/2 hours to go through the four
tours. I
took almost 200 pictures with my CoolPix 990, no flash, one set of
batteries.
What I have on this page are 16 representative pictures of Graceland.
Obviously
there's a huge amount of material that I'm not showing. If these
pictures pique
your interest then I do recommend going to Graceland, maybe not as a
dedicated
trip unless you're going to see other things in the area.
I was still getting used to my camera so a good 3/4ths of the indoor
shots are
at least a little blurry, and usually very blurry. Therefore the
outdoor shots
will look quite good, while the indoor shots are the best that I could
find that
were also topical and different. You can't use flash indoors, something
to keep
in mind if you're going there to take pictures.

Graceland
is the name of the mansion. The original owner named it after his
mother
or wife. Elvis liked the name and kept it when he bought the place. The
mansion is
quite large, at least two stories (the second floor is off-limits) with
an extensive
basement area.

One
of the typical rooms in the mansion. Notice the "Please Do Not Touch"
sign,
one of many scattered throughout the place. Most of the rooms are
actually
cordoned off to keep the tourists from wandering around and touching
things.
I can understand because there are thousands of people each week going
through
here.

This
picture is a bit dark. There is a certain question of whether I should
touch
up the picture or present what my camera took unadulterated. I tried to
touch it
up a bit but didn't like the results, so I used the original picture.
This room
had a lot of animal themed furniture and I thought the teddy bear
looked cute.
The lighting isn't this bad, but the CoolPix is not the best poor light
camera.
It needs quite a bit of light or a long exposure time to take bright
pictures.
