The Bodyguard from Beijing is basically the Hong Kong action movie version of The Bodyguard with Jet Li in the Kevin Costner role and Christy Chung in the Whitney Houston role. Of course there are many differences but the basic premise is the same: the bodyguard has to protect the beautiful woman and they fall in love, a love that cannot be.

Li plays Hui Ching-Yeung, a Chinese former soldier and now a police officer in the bodyguard division. Apparently they're very good. Good enough that a rich businessman goes to the Chinese government and "hires" Hui to protect his girlfriend, Michelle (Chung) from a crimininal boss who wants the last witness testifying against him eliminated.

Hui is very serious and professional. The first thing he has to contend with is the Hong Kong Police in the form of two police officers assigned to protect Michelle. Michelle is also unhappy at all the surveillance and restrictions. It's only when she goes to the mall where a firefight breaks out that she starts to understand how serious this all is.

Meanwhile Michelle starts falling for Hui. With her nephew Billy (William Chu) Hui shows a more human side. She tries to seduce Hui. Hui fends her off, not trusting his feelings. After some soul searching Hui may have decided to confess his feelings but then the last climatic battle starts.
Eventually Hui has to make the supreme sacrifice and take a few bullets for Michelle. Somehow he survives to kill the assassin. Then he returns to China, to duty and the only life he knows, apparently never to see Michelle again. End of the movie.

The translation wasn't good. Lots of misspellings. Also the timing at times was off so it was hard to tell who was saying what since there were no text clues. The story itself was ok. The romance part wasn't really done well but the action scenes were high energy. It was an interesting movie but not better than the Hollywood version.
