The Opposite of Sex
is a somewhat dark comedy about a 16-year old white trash girl, Dede
(Christina Ricci), who runs away from home and visits her homosexual
half-brother Bill (Martin Donovan) and then proceeds to ruin his life.
Dede seduces Bill's current lover Matt (Ivan Sergei) and runs away with
him and a bunch of Bill's money. Matt's other boyfriend accuses Bill of
molesting him in high school (Bill being a high school teacher). Bill
goes after Matt and Dede with Lucia (Lisa Kudrow), Bill's ex-lover
Tom's sister (Tom having died of AIDS) who is secretly in love with
Bill. Chasing after them all is Carl (Lyle Lovett), a sheriff in their
small town who is taken with Lucia.
It's not that convoluted. But the plot goes: they catch up to Dede, she
shows that she is still a self-centered bitch, Dede flees and they
chase her again. Meanwhile I guess it's a story about dealing with
death and finding love and the power of a jailbait body.
I thought it was an ok movie. Nothing really much to recommend it
though not awful or anything. There is a voiceover track as Dede
frequently talks during the movie. It's one of those movies where I
didn't bond with any of the characters and didn't really care what
happened to them.
