In the middle of winter in a small rural community three people find a downed plane full of money. They think it's drug money and decide to take it, hide it, then wait until Spring for the plane to be found. Once the law concludes their case, they will be free to spend the money. A Simple Plan but it's a long winter.

Brothers Hank (Bill Paxton) and Jacob (Billy Bob Thornton) Mitchell and Jacob's friend Lou (Brent Briscoe) are the trio who find the plane. Hank went to college and is the smartest of the three. Jacob is a rather simple man. Lou is not quite as simple but he is more of a redneck. Hank convinces the other two to wait and he hides the money himself.

Trouble starts when Sarah (Bridget Fonda) finds out because Hank can't keep his big mouth shut. She suggests putting some of the money back otherwise the police will suspect something. But when Hank and Jacob go to do that, Jacob panics and has to kill a local. Now they have to fix that and it spirals from there as each fix to the previous problem goes awry and requires another "simple" solution.

The whole movie goes from step to step as the plans get more elaborate or require even more sacrifice. In the end, lots of bad things happen to people who probably deserve it. Although at times you might feel a bit of sympathy for Hank and Sarah, they both prove to be quite right bastards when push comes to shove.
