Maybe I'm in a good mood lately because I really think that Terminator 3 is worth four stars.
We have Arnold Schwarzenegger returning as yet another T-101. Like in
T2 he is here to save the future by saving John Connor (Nick Stahl).
This time the evil Terminator is a female T-X (Kristanna Loken).
The plot is that Connor has dropped off the grid. Not being able to
target him, Skynet sends the T-X back in time to kill Connors
lieutenants. The T-101 is sent back in a counter-mission. Connor runs
into a former schoolmate, Kate Brewster (Claire Danes) who is a target
and therefore is kidnapped by Connor and the T-101 for her own good.
Lots of chase scenes follow. Action and explosions. Heavy duty fights.
Meanwhile we learn that Skynet is going to go online today and shortly
after Armageddon starts. Our heroes head for the military base to stop
Skynet's activation with the T-X also heading there to stop them.
**** SPOILERS ****
I'm impressed they nuked the Earth at the end of the movie. Armageddon
couldn't be stopped so Connor and Brewster decide to fulfill their
destiny and lead humanity's fight against the machines. And then the
movie ends in a divergent future. If it is ever made, T4 will be an
interesting movie.
**** END SPOILERS ****
I thought the story was
well done. Even in an action movie it has a good plot and advances the
history of the franchise. The action is good and it's very much 1980's
blockbuster but with better special effects. You get a lot of the
Terminator style and at the end of the day it's a simple and massively
entertaining film. |
Extras
-- Commentary with director Jonathan Mostow, actors Arnold
Schwarzenegger, Nick Stahl, Claire Danes and Kristanna Loken.
Each actor did some comments by themselves (Mostow was present when
Danes did hers and he had some comments). Mostly the commentary is
about their acting experiences and the whole production. Schwarzenegger
had some fairly insightful stuff about production, why certain things
were done and what they hoped to accomplish. Danes talks about playing
a complex character that changes the most in the movie. Loken talks
about having to get into shape and training to act robotic. Stahl had
personal impressions to relate.
-- Commentary with Jonathan Mostow.
This is a standard director's commentary. He talks about the production
and the mythology and what he tried to bring to the franchise.
