Monster-in-Law is a comedy about an overprotective mother who wants to make sure her son doesn't marry the wrong woman. In this case the mother, Viola, is played by Jane Fonda and the prospective daughter-in-law, Charlie, is played by Jennifer Lopez. The other major roles are the son, Kevin (Michael Vartan), and Viola's faithful assistant Ruby (Wanda Sykes).

Viola is a veteran newswoman who was recently laid off and sufferred a breakdown as a result. She's famous and influential and has met lots of famous people. Her son is an accomplished doctor. And into their life comes Charlotte, who works at a temp agency, walks dogs, and likes to design clothes.

Doesn't matter to Kevin as he immediately falls in love with Charlie. The movie cleverly goes from their initial meeting and skips several months to when Viola gets out of the clinic and finally meets Charlie. It's quite a shock to Viola that Kevin is going to marry so beneath him and she resolves to make Charlie's life hell and drive her away, without making it look like she's doing it on purpose.

There are quite a few funny scenes and it's a movie with two well-known actresses going at each other. The ending is resolved rather well and it didn't seem forced. Overall I thought it was a nice movie.
