Summary
A/1/1:
Selena lends her Blowfish company to Governor-General Nagumo.
He needs the four lances to man two firebases that protect
the last two mines in control of the Combine. In return they
will be paid standard Garrison pay, get all salvage rights,
and receive whatever supplies they need for maintenance and
to repair (but not replace) their Mechs.
Selena takes her command lance and Jinx's lance with her.
The other two lances will man the other firebase. A dropship
takes Selena's force to Firebase Bertha, the current garrison
leaves on the dropship with whatever has been mined at that
time.
The first couple of weeks go by uneventfully. Selena sends
out Jinx's lance on patrol to check for Rebel activity.
Boredom sets in as the Blowfish plus some infantry on
the base wait for the inevitable Rebel attack. Selena has
a tower built in the compound, reinforced so that a Mech
can stand on it and serve as lookout and fire support.
Then one day, a patrol comes back and reports heavy Rebel
activity all around the base. Jinx is sick with some sort
of jungle disease, which leaves the garrison with seven
Mechs. Selena has the Blowfish man the walls and wait for
the Rebels to appear.
The first wave hits from the opposite sides of the firebase,
aiming at the gates on each side. Two Catapults mix it up
with Selena, while six medium Mechs rush the far gate, which
the rest of the Mechs are defending. Accurate fire from
Selena takes down a Catapult as the Rebel Mechs get into
the compound. A fierce hand-to-hand firefight erupts as more
rebel Mechs come onto the scene.
Selena holds one side of the firebase. She takes down Mech
after Mech, but more still come in. The rest of the Blowfish
fight furiously, barely holding the gate as two Chargers
and a Warhammer are destroyed at the threshhold. Maya's
Hunchback goes down with a destroyed leg, but still she
grimly holds her place.
As the ammo starts running out, things remain desperate.
Maya, Selena, and Rufus are out of ammo. Most of the Mechs
have taken internal damage, but surprisingly, only Maya's
Mech is crippled. Still the enemy comes on, and more can
be seen at the edge of the woods sorrounding the firebase.
Another few minutes of intense fighting leaves the remains
of twenty-odd Rebel Mechs in and around Firebase Bertha.
Selena and her men wait for the next wave of attackers. But,
she watches in astonishment as the remaining Rebel Mechs
leave. Apparently, the Rebel commander has had enough of
sending his troops through the meatgrinder that is Bertha.
The Blowfish command has survived perhaps its fiercest test.
This battle will forever be remembered in Blowfish history,
for here stood the thin Blowfish line, never yielding to
despair, proving themselves worthy of the great Blowfish
tradition. Some kind of Blowfish award or medal should be
commissioned for the brave men and women that fought this
day.
