Ghost Girl Subplot B2

Ghost Girl

"You've been regularly checking out books and reading up on the art of writing. The one book you've been yearning to check out is one of the rare copies of 'The Art of Mystery Writing' by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Unfortunately, it's been overdue for three years, last checked out by one Cliff McKnight."

Penelope's objective is to find Cliff and get him to return his overdue book.
  • Cliff's registered address with the library is an old apartment that he moved out of 5 years ago. [Red herring]
  • Cliff's address with the Hawaii DMV is a small house, recently abandoned.
  • Neighbors say that Cliff kept to himself, always working on his "big mystery novel". They haven't seen him for a few months and assumed he went back to the mainland when the war started.
  • Inside the house is Cliff's unfinished manuscript "Death of a Big Shooter". It's about an inveterate billiards gambler who ends up owing the mob a bunch of money.
  • Also in the house is a pool table, fancy cues, and various receipts from "The Cue Ball", a local pool bar.
  • Patrons at The Cue Ball remember Cliff. Say that he owed a lot of money to Slim Domino. Slim says he sold the markers to Tony Lucerno.
  • Tony Lucerno says that Cliff's markers were a bad investment. One that he had to... bury... in IRS paperwork of course. "Haven't heard from him in a while, not that I'm keeping track or anything."
  • If reminded that he sort of owes Penelope, he will end the conversation. Later on, she will get an anonymous note pointing to Cliff's burial site.
  • Cliff had been tied up and buried alive in the cemetary, where he died. But on his body is the missing library book.
  • If Penelope reports the crime and mentions the library book, it will be taken by the police as material evidence.

Awards:

+1/2 for tracking down the book
+1/2 for notifying the police
-1/2 if police take the book
