Recap
The episode started out innocently enough as the ship was transferred
to the Klingon border. A chance to learn new skills, or so I
interpreted the players' groans. A week or two of boredom resolved
itself into a clear mission for the uncharacteristically fidgety Lt
Serin. The "Wandering Child", an Andorian freighter carrying vital
medical supplies (in addition to its normal cargo of luxury foods) had
gone missing, failing to check in during its last two checkpoints. The
"Discovery" was dispatched to the area to find the freighter and make
sure its medical cargo arrives safely.
After extrapolating where the freighter could be, Lt Serin ordered a
course for the Child's last stopover. No luck there, as there were no
indications of foul play. But a faint warp trail was detected, leading
in the direction of the freighter's flight path, so off they went after
the Child. A few hours later they encountered a fierce ion storm, with
the trail leading directly into it.
Intensive scans showed a warp-capable ship in the storm, which refused
to acknowledge their hails ("they are unwilling to respond, or they are
unable to respond"). The Discovery went in, half blind and with minimal
shields (despite Gonar's valiant efforts to increase shield output) due
to the storm. Inside they found a Kzinti Raider with what looked like a
freighter behind it. But with sensors barely working and visibility
poor, they couldn't be sure.
