Promotion Calculation

Promotion is done at the end of the season and consists of two parts: the number of dice rolled and the bonus to the result. It's much like any skill test, except that there is only a drama die if you roll more than one die.

Number of dice rolled is based on the skill checks that I have players roll throughout the season. Each level of success (either all skills at the base level, at the base level +1, at the base level +2, etc; or total score at the base level, at the base level +6, at the base level +12, etc) is worth one point. Once a character has completed three levels of success (either gotten all skill tests at base +2 or the total score at base +12) they move on to another skill set. One die (if there are at least two) is a standard drama die. The character with the highest skills score gets a bonus of +1 die.

Number of Dice = floor of [(skills score)^(1/2)]

or

Skills Score    # Dice
      0            0
     1-3           1
     4-8           2
     9-15          3
    16-31          4

The target number is set based on the rank they're trying to get. The bonus to the roll is based on renown, as shown. Basically Starfleet renown (Discipline, Initiative, Openness) is the most important, Aggression can't help but can hurt you a bit, Skill can help or hurt but it's not as significant. If a character gets within 3 of the target that's usually some sort of minor promotion like a Department Head or Line Officer. Same would apply if the character gets 3 or better than the target. The target numbers are based on the renown targets given in page 182 of the ST:TNG RPG with a distribution of A 10%, D 20%, I 20%, O 20%, S 30% and about a 10 on the dice roll.

Base Target: Lieutenant JG        9
             Lieutenant          13
             Lt Commander        18
             Commander           24
             Captain             31
             Admiral             39

Bonuses:     (Disc + Init + Open)/2  round down
             Skill/4  round down
             -1 if Aggr > 0
-1 if Aggr is one of highest renown aspects
             -1 for Reputation (Aggressive)

Miscellaneous

For all advantages that give players +1 Die, that extra die is a drama die. Note that even if you roll multiple drama-6's, only one counts so the maximum you can get with dice only is 12.

Characters can't raise base skills over level 2 without GM permission. In general I'm only allowing one skill to be raised to 3 at the end of each season. This hopefully makes characters raise specializations instead.
