kcw | star trek: the next generation campaign
<< Previous Page | Next Page >>

A little over four weeks before my Star Trek campaign starts, and I'm already hitting some difficulties. First was when to set the campaign? It'd be really neat to start off the characters at Star- fleet Academy, but there are a few problems with that. It's not classic Star Trek and it uses a different development system than a regular campaign.

The other problem is that the campaign wanted to run is composed of three adventure modules, only one of which has been released. Wandering the discussion boards, I found out that volume 2 has been delayed until there's a lull in the production schedule. Based on how fast I wanted to run the campaign, I obviously can't use this pre-made campaign. So I have to change the focus of tha campaign.

There has to be a main plot. A sort of unifying theme to run the campaign. Something to shoot for, something with a tangible and obtainable goal. Even my last campaign, which was rather meandering at times, even in that I had a vision for the ending scene, and it was just a matter of getting the characters to that scene.

One of the ideas that I thought of last night was to expand the character generation system to be more involved. Especially when in Starfleet Academy. The characters can go year by year, choosing their courses (which will raise their skills) and probably doing one adventure a year. Then two adventures for the cadet cruise will bring it up to six adventures before the characters enter play as ensigns.

This will involve a fair amount of work to set up the character generation. I think it'll be fun and will take a good couple of months of real-time. So that's the theme for the first season. Each season of six episodes should have a common theme or story arc, slowly guiding the players through the campaign story arc.
