Alto's Odyssey (2018)
Alto's Odyssey (2018)
Alto's Odyssey is an endless runner type game and a sequel to Alto's Adventure. You are sandboarding downhill doing backflips, grinding on ropes and vines, wallclimbing, picking up coins and avoiding rocks and lemmings.
Game play is very smooth. You only have one control. Tap and maybe hold for a bit to jump. Continue holding to do a backflip. Doing backflips and other tricks slowly increases your speed which you need to jump over chasms and outrun angry lemmings.
With that simple mechanic there is a good variety of tricks you can do. If you land on a rock you bounce up high enough to do a backflip and same if you land on a balloon. You can do combinations: wall grind to a backflip to land on a balloon rope (balloons here are the kind that take people up and they often come in pairs or more with ropes tide between them). Combinations give you more points.
If the game were just to travel as far as you can collecting a high score it would get kind of boring. But you also level up. Each level has three tasks (e.g. collect X number of coins or do a special trick combination). Do the tasks in one or more missions and you go to the next level.
Every ten levels you unlock a new character. The first one is a girl who sandboards slowly but can backflip quickly. Then a heavy guy who can get high top speed but backflips slowly. Then a guy fairly good at both. Then a llama who can double jump. The terrain also starts getting a little harder.
Still, if you've played Alto's Adventure, Odyssey is not that much better. More of a refinement to the game, funner overall but enough to buy essentially the same game again (even if it's only $5)?
