Capellans Invade New Vandenberg

New Vandenberg, Taurian Concordat, Rimward Periphery

A large Capellan force landed on New Vandenberg last month. The force is composed of a BattleMech regiment with three supporting regiments. The invaders were able to establish a beachhead near New Vandenberg City on the Northern Continent.

Most of New Vandenberg's garrison forces have been sent to the Capellan occupation zone. This left only two mixed regiments to defend New Vandenberg backed by several regiments of militia. As of now the defenders are holding their own while the Taurian government decides on a response.

Magistracy Talks Continue

Canopus IV, Magistracy of Canopus, Rimward Periphery

Talks continue between the Taurian Concordat and the Magistracy of Canopus. Thomas Calderon, Protector of the Taurian Concordat, has long sought to establish a mutual defense treaty between the two most powerful periphery states. The Magestrix has avoided the issue in the past due to the previous conflicts between the two states.

The Magistracy has recently been beset by attacks from the nearby Marian Hegemony. Magistracy forces have been hard put to protect their worlds from both the Hegemony and the Free Worlds League. Magestrix Kyalla Centrella is now more willing to enter a treaty with the Concordat for the military aid the Taurians can provide.

New Supernova Sighted

Brinton, Taurian Concordat, Rimward Periphery

Johann Westhall of Brinton is the first person to have detected a new supernova in the nearby Lesser Magellanic Cloud. Since Brinton is the closest inhabited planet to the LMC, it will be several years before other observatories can see the supernova.

"This is a good thing," said Professor Westhall. "The main observatory at the University of New Vandenberg will be prepared to take data as the star goes supernova. Meanwhile I can take readings exclusively. It's exiting."

Next to the Taurian captial itself, New Vandenberg is the most important world in the Concordat. The site of bitter figting during the Reunification War and center of a harsh post-war occupation, its inhabitants have sworn to prevent their world from ever being occupied again. Accordingly, the Taurians have established a large parmanent garrison backed by an extensive array of fortifications on the planet.

At present, New Vandenberg supports a population of well over a billion and the largest Taurian war material industry outside the Hyades Cluster. In addition, the planet is known for its rich variety of rare and exotic avian life-forms, many of which remain protected in nature preserves in the planet's southern hemisphere.
