Maximilian Liao Calls for Alliance

Sian, Sian Commonality, Capellan Confederation

Chancellor Maximilian Liao called for the formation of a new alliance to oppose the Federated-Commonwealth alliance. In a national broadcast, Liao asked Janos Marik and Takashi Kurita to join him in a holy crusade against the Federated Suns and their Lyran lackeys.

There has been no reply from the Marik government. There is no expectation that there will be a reply from the Marik government. An alliance with the Capellan Confederation is out of the question for a majority of Free Worlders. Hundreds of years of vicious warfare has left the League with no love for the Capellans. Only the Lyran Commonwealth is more hated by the people of the Free Worlds.

Pirates Raid Abbey District

Maxwell, Abbey District, Free Worlds League

Heavy pirate activity has been reported in the Abbey District. The Abbey District is a small group of worlds located near the outer edge of the League, close to the Lyran Commonwealth. The worlds of Maxwell and Manotick have been raided several times in the last month. No pirates have been captured and their 'Mechs only show the Jolly Roger.

The 2nd Brigade of the Fusiliers of Oriente, which has been assigned to protect those worlds, has refused to help the civilians. Colonel Ricardo Fuentes cites that his Brigade is only tasked with defending the military installations and that his men are spread too thin to mount an expedition to find the pirate base.

Heavy Storms Sweep Through Atreus

Atreus, Marik Commonwealth, Free Worlds League

The whole planet of Atreus has been experiencing heavy storms throughout the month. Thunderstorms have hit coastal cities, sandstorms swirl around the Great Desert, and snowstorms are constant in the mountains. Few places have been spared and even the Southern Hemisphere has been plagued by several monsoons. Many cities have been flooded and millions of people are homeless.

Some scientists blame the weak ozone layer of the planet which has let carbon dioxide build up in the atmosphere. The government response is that although this is an unusually stormy winter, similar weather conditions have occurred before, the last time in 2844. The storms have been attributed with over 12 billion M-bills of property damage and lost productivity.

Principality of Regulus

Regulus has had a long and checkered history. One of the three original states in the Free Worlds, the Principality was long the wealthiest province in the League. For centuries, however, Regulus was also the gathering point for opposition to the government in Parliament. The always-contentious Regulans were independent from the start, always placing the interests of the Principality ahead of those of the Free Worlds, and, later, the Star League. Exacerbated by economic losses in the mid-27th century, the Regulans were in the forefront of the Protectionist movement, and ultimately supported the terrorist group "Scourge of Death". The massive retaliation by Captain-General Geralk Marik ultimately drove out the ruling Selaj family, fracturing the Regulan state and its network of allies.

Although the province has never truly recovered, it still maintains an influential place in League politics. In place of the imperial Selaj family, numerous political machines rule the remains of Regulus, most recently the supremely venal Cameron-Jones family, which seems perfectly acclimated to the political environment of the modern Free Worlds League.
