Summary
On Altair, Selena's troops have retaken Dragon's Domain and the
sorrounding
mountains. Meanwhile, the alien device that the Altairan scientist
reassembled
keeps transmitting a weak signal, one that is answered by something in
one of
the mountains near Dragon's Domain. While most of the Royal Guard
detachment
build up the defenses in case of a counter attack by the Skye Rangers,
Selena sends Wrigley's lance into the mountain to trace the other end
of the signal.
Hours of wandering around in Mech-sized tunnels leads Wrigley's band
deep into
the mountain. As they enter a large cavern, four Whitworths ambush the
lance.
The Whitworths score significant damage on Wrigley's lancemates before
they are
all destroyed. No identifiable markings on the Whitworths, and no
bodies found.
With a growing sense of unease, Wrigley leads his lance further on into
the
stygian depths, ever-onwards following the signal. They enter another
cavern,
where once again two Whitworths appear. This time the foursome is
prepared,
although it does them little good as Minnie May's Rifleman is destroyed
in the
ensuing firefight. Strangely, Wrigley's Mech has been untouched so far,
while
the other remaining Mechs have taken heavy damage and may not last
another
such fight.
With the signal getting stronger, Wrigley elects to explore further on
his
own, and leaves Drew and Rubina in the last cavern. A tense hour later,
Wrigley
arrives at another cavern, where once again two Whitworths try to
ambush him.
His Mech takes minor damage as he bulls past them into the next cavern.
There
he sees the source of the signal, a large metallic disk, more of a
hoop, hollow
inside. The disk has strange runes running over it.
As he admires this marvel. A lone Whitworth steps out of the shadows
and blasts
his Tempest with five medium lasers. Shocked, Wrigley returns fire and
falls
back from what looks to be his customized Whitworth. The Whitworth
pursues,
eerily scoring with every weapon again and again. Desperately, Wrigley
double
fires all his weapons and cripples the Whitworth. But it refuses to
die, as it
also double fires and cripples Wrigley's Mech. With the heat rising
dangerously,
Wrigley once again double fires and destroys the evil Mech as his own
Mech shuts
down.
