Synopsis
John Gilmore tracks down a kidnap victim. Felix Faust has taken her to
Mount Kilauea (on the Big Island) to sacrifice her and summon three
demons. John arrives just as the demon is forming. He shoots the Red
Jar of Calythos, freeing Abnegazar from Faust's control. The demon
imprisons Faust and then turns his attention to John, who has freed the
girl during the confusion. Meanwhile the room is shaking and the
volcano is about to erupt. John says "look behind you" then runs as
Abnegazar looks. The tunnel caves in, allowing John and the girl to
escape as Kilauea erupts.
Later in the week, the Island City Heroes are given a mission.
President Roosevelt wants a concentrated super-hero strike against the
Axis Powers. The ICH's part of the operation will be to destroy an
experimental Japanese radar site on the island of Nirikawa. There is
also a Japanese resupply base at Bungalow Bay on the same island. The
group will go in two teams in two subs. Sub 1 has John, Ghosty and the
Light. |
Mysterious things start happening
from the get go. The Light wins a lot
of money at a poker game and the money disappears. A search of the boat
finds the money in John's duffel bag. The next day Ghosty's food tastes
salty to her, but normal to everyone else. The day after John wakes up
covered in cockroaches. And then the engine breaks down. Obviously it's
Abnegazar, surmises John.
Good thing there's a second sub. As the three heroes transfer to the
other sub (where Rad and Riff are), two Jap planes attack but are
beaten off. The next day Riff's gun comes to life and attacks him. And
then Abnegazar shows himself and attacks John. But the demon waited too
long for he is unable to defeat all five heroes at once.
Once at the island, the Axis Mystic Shield takes effect, taking over
Rad and Ghosty. The plan is for Ghosty to invisibly place demolition
charges and destroy the radar site. That will signal two teams (Rad
with John and The Light with Riff) to attack the resupply base. Ghosty
uses this opportunity to report to Kamikaze, who commands the radar
site defences.
They warn the garrison and set off a fake explosion. Rad knocks out
John and takes him to the radar site. Meanwhile The Light and Riff do
their half of their operation. They contact Ghosty and Rad, who meet
them and immediately attack the two. Although gaining surprise, the two
controlled heroes are unable to defeat Light and Riff. The two
remaining heroes rescue John, destroy the radar site, and then capture
Kamikaze.
The return trip is uneventful. The Doolittle Raid goes off as planned,
in part thanks to the heroes' work (though Ghosty's warning did allow
the Japanese to spot the task force early). Once back in Hawaii the
heroes learn that other hero groups suffered the same problems due to
the newly revealed Axis Mystic Shields that sorround Germany and Japan.
