The topic is Icee's character generation for Eric's
ErzoQuest campaign. Going
back to the tradition of random characters, I rolled randomly for the
race
and everything else. She is a snowman, who are the bad guys in this
campaign
but Eric figured out a way to get her into the group (much like Jolly
in Star
Wars, what she does will ultimately strengthen Cold, she is a true
patriot).
Originally I wanted her to be a guy and name him Frostor. When it came
time
for character generation I rolled randomly for sex and got female (and
also
got left-handed too, naturally that makes her a step-child). Character
sex is
not that important to me, so I'm comfortable playing essentially the
same
exact female character that I always play when I have a female
character. Sort
of flighty and moody and fun-loving.
Characteristics. RuneQuest uses a pretty much standard Strength,
Constitution,
Size, Dexterity, Intelligence, Power, and Appearance attributes. The
snowguys
have 3d-2 Str and Con, 2d+6 Siz and Int, and 3d Dex, Pow and App. I
rolled
really low and got something like 6 Str, 12 Con, 8 Siz, 10 Int, 12 Dex,
14
Pow, 9 App. If you get less than 90 you can add up to six points,
depending
how low you rolled. I got the full six. You can also switch attributes
if they
used the same dice roll. So switching things around Icee ended up with
something like 14 Str, 8 Con, 11 Siz, 10 Dex, 11 Int, 9 Pow, 14 App.
Str and
Con can be raised to the max of Str/Con/Siz so one of those had to be
high.
I wanted Str and Siz to add up to 25 for the d4 damage bonus. You can't
raise
an ability to within 2 points of the max possible roll, so 14 is the
max for
Str unless I roll higher naturally. Actually it's 15, so why did I get
Str to
14? Oh well. Pow goes up quickly so I switched it with App because I
also want
my character to be pretty.

Next were weapons. With my stats I could use any weapon
so once again I rolled
randomlu and got poleaxe, a big weapon. You can use it one-handed if
your Str
is 4 more than the required (and you can substitute Dex for Str at a
2:1 ratio
if needed). So I could use it one handed (now I think I have a Dex of
12, it's
a lot harder to know these things without looking at my character; I'll
have
to transcribe it to my computer this week). I rolled randomly for a
shield
and got a nice target shield. Rolled randomly for a missile weapon and
luckily
ended up with a self bow (any bow is better than a hand missile
weapon).
Eric made me a soldier so I got appropriate skills based on the
Barbarian
Soldier template (roll d4+4 for experience and I got 8 years). I also
was
given 4 point armor. Roll 2d4 for magic and unfortunately only got one
point
each of Cold and Death. With only a couple of choices of each I got
Darkness
and Disruption. So in the end Icee is not bad considering she has on
average
low stats. She can deliver a lot of damage with that poleaxe (3d6+d4)
and her
shield and armor gives her good (16 AP) armor, assuming she parries.
Combat
skills are just under 50% A bit low on the hit points though, and she
carries
enough things that casting in combat will only work about 2/3rds of the
time.
Lots of room for improvement. Improve Con and weapon skills will be my
main
priority. After one adventure my feeling is that Icee is very "safe".
She
doesn't want to get into fights and would rather avoid them or run,
because
combat is dangerous and people get hurt. She feels bad when other
people get
hurt as when she is hurt herself. Not much of a Death God worshipper.
Down
the line she may have to change religions, not something to be taken
lightly
in Eric's campaign because the Gods are bound to do something nasty to
you.
