Captain's Log

From the Starfleet Academy Survival Test episode

Captain's Log, USS Fearless. We have taken aboard several squads of Starfleet cadets en route to Aldos II, where they hope to complete their final exam in planetary survival. Some of the cadets are practicing in the ship's holodeck at this moment. I recall my own survival exam at the Academy years ago. From what I remember, they're going to need all the practice they can get.

Cadet's Log (Before)

Senior Year survival test. Our whole class is being transported to Aldos II to conduct the final test. Each squad will put down in a separate part of the planet, to try to survive for a week in the hostile environment of this primitive world. Other than the Koboyashi Maru scenario, this is probably the most important test in the Academy. Cadets that can take the Koboyashi Maru without batting an eye have been reduced to eating each other when confronted with a real-live situation, or so that's the scuttlebutt going around.

Frankly, I don't know if I can do this. I've never been more than an hour away from the nearest McDaniels, and the outdoors are so dirty and icky. Cadet Mrghathaf says this'll be the easiest test we've taken at the Academy. Of course, he doesn't have anything to worry about, he's got his photosynthesis to fall back on, so he won't starve.

But if it is that easy, I'm hoping we'll get to do all the camping things that I've heard about. Roasting marshmallows, telling ghost stories, looking for buried treasure, the sort of stuff that Ensign Paris told me about when we were dating. Maybe I can find some cute furry animal to adopt, like in the three-vids.

Cadet's Log (After)

Well, that didn't go the way I thought it should have. Sure, knowing now that it was all just a holosimulation, it's easy to see the holes in the plot. As if you could have a peaceful race of flying squirrel people living undiscovered on an out of the way world on the Federation border. Everybody knows that squirrels are vicious predators, and I can only imagine how malevolent a race of flying squirrels would be. I can believe that they had been undiscovered -- Starfleet is constantly finding new races in supposedly well-explored regions of the UFP.

Anyway, facing Cardassians was rather unfortunate for my squad. Who knew that Cadet Mrghathaf's third uncle on his mother's cousin's friend's side had been killed by Cardassians? I never thought I'd see him charge off and get cut down in a volley of phaser fire. And of course Cadet Mzzias and myself had to charge along with him. All for one and we're all dead, or something like that.

I look forward to getting back to Starfleet Academy. I wonder what ship we'll be posted on for our cadet cruise. Maybe a Galaxy Class like the Enterprise, or one of those sleek Intrepid Class ships like Voyager. Not to belittle the Fearless, but this ship was old when my parents were born! I'm sure that if you smell carefully, you can detect the faint odor of decades of midshipmen sweat permeating the bulkheads.
