Recap

The first episode of the fifth season was Return to Farpoint. We had an almost full crew, with only Serin and Beltana absent. An early Dave Biggins scenario, this one had the characters going to Farpoint to help evacuate New Farpoint Station, built one year after the events in "Encounter at Farpoint". The Bandi government is still the same as before, with Gropler Zorn maintaining his hold as planetary governor. The dissident movement, centered around the mysterious Providers, has gained momentum and acts of sabotage and violence have increased. Starfleet Command, in its infinite wisdom, has decided to evacuate New Farpoint Station, which is used as a major resupply base for the sector. The players are there to help the evacuation and to investigate the rebellion to make sure it isn't being influenced by outside sources.

But before their arrival at Farpoint, a little inter-character drama was playing itself out. First I should mention that the group-designed Captain's Shuttle was built and presented to the Captain, who was quite pleased with Gonar for going through all that trouble, ignoring the rest of the characters and reinforcing Jon's poor opinion of the Captain. Then a situation developed wherein Clancy, distraught at the violent conclusion of the season 4 finale, became surly and combative towards John and everyone else. John was quite nonplussed and had no idea what to do -- crew relations not being one of his strong points at the Academy. So he sent Clancy to go talk to Krystal, who had to relunctantly conclude that Clancy was troubled, but could still perform his duties.
