Recap
Episode 603, "A Doomsday Like Any Other", is based on one of the early
FASA Star Trek adventures. I was going to run a different adventure,
but I bought this module online and when it arrived I looked at it a
bit and thought "this is the perfect adventure to run." It's based on
the Planet Killer episode of Star Trek, where Kirk destroys the Planet
Killer by overloading the warp engines of the Constellation inside the
monster.
The episode is laid out as another routine patrol. A distress signal
from Patrick O'Flaherty, a local merchant, summons the ship. The ship
arrives to find O'Flaherty's ship being chased by a Planet Killer.
After saving the merchantman, they warp ahead to the Ectair system,
just three days ahead of the monster. Ectair is an independent world
with ties to the Federation and the Romulan Empire, so the characters
can't just commandeer a ship to use against the monster. Instead they
must deal with the local government, Kinglines (owner of a brand new
starliner of the right size), and a Romulan scout ship which also wants
to help (while making the Federation look bad of course).
Eventually the characters are supposed to get a ship and rig it, then
detonate it inside the Planet Killer, which doesn't die! O'Flaherty
comes forward to say that he found a small probe next to the Planet
Killer, which might be the missing key. Of course he would like to be
compensated by whichever government can pay him the most money. More
Romulan ships arrive, though surprisingly the Romulan commander wants
to cooperate with the Federation (which has better scientific
equipment) in studying the probe. O'Flaherty volunteers his ship as
neutral ground (and to better keep an eye on both sides).
