Recap

Today I ran the last pregenerated episode for my Star Trek campaign. It was based on "The Gentara Incident" -- a full-length (well, what passes for full- length for LUGTrek) adventure for Romulan characters. So I had to make a lot of adjustments to it. But therein lies the challenge. I replaced the NPCs with recurring characters, changed the motive of the adventure, added a few extra subplots. Even then I still had to improvise as the characters went off track and pursued a tangent.

The great part about it is that I handled it. I handled characters splitting up, going off down dead-end alleys, in general mucking it up and I adjusted the adventure on-the-fly and kept the adventure moving. And I did it mostly confidently, without looking at my notes, making up as the episode moved along. The key thing when running is to keep it entertaining and having characters run and bounce off of a dead-end is counterproductive.

I think I did a bang-up job this run. Even if Donald fell asleep -- well he was tired. Come to think of it, Shannon fell asleep too. Damn we're getting old. In any case, I'm getting more and more comfortable running. I really feel like with some preparation I can handle most anything that my players try to do. As long as you have a clear idea of what is going on behind the scenes and what the motivations of the NPCs are, you can deal with any little surprises that your players will inevitably throw at you.
